Dr. Somayya Coovadia - Dental Surgeon
Dr. Somayya Coovadia completed her Bachelor of Dentistry degree in 1996, followed by her Masters in Dental Science in Early Childhood Care, which she completed summa cum laude in 2000.
Thereafter, she lectured and supervised dental students and dental therapy students in Diagnostics, Radiology, and Restorative Dentistry at MEDUNSA and UKZN, in addition to running a part-time private practice until 2008. Dr. Coovadia then opened a full-time private practice in Musgrave, Durban, where she focused on interceptive pre-orthodontics.
In 2017 Dr. Coovadia began working in the field of Myofunctional Orthodontics, helping children with sleep-disordered breathing symptoms by identifying and treating malocclusions. She collaborates closely with other healthcare professionals, such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and psychologists, and refers patients to ENT specialists as necessary.
In 2020, Dr. Coovadia established Oral and Airway Health, a practice where she partners with her daughter Ameera Sulaman, who is a dental and oral myofunctional therapist. The practice recently acquired a Neogen Plasma Aesthetic and Skin Rejuvenation, Resurface, Regeneration Machine from Energist Medical Group UK, which addresses fine lines, wrinkles, pore reduction, pigmentation, acne scars, active acne, burn revision, scar revision, soft blepharoplasty, stretch mark reduction and onchomycosis which is safe for all skin types. Dr. Coovadia and Ameera joined Eden Health Care facility in December 2022 and are now based in room 23. Dr. They also have dental rooms in Musgrave and at Prime, Human Performance Institute at Moses Mahbhida.
